Dear Bekader alumni and students,

You might be a student looking for a graduation assignment to finish your studies. Or perhaps you are an alumni who has a very interesting assignment that would be perfect as a graduation assignment for a student. Below you will find an explantion on the graduation assignements for both the bachelor and master programmes of (International) Business Administration and Industrial Engineering & Management. In dutch (Internationale) Bedrijfskunde en Technische Bedrijfskunde.

Master Thesis Process Business Administration (BA)

The master thesis consists of two parts: a master thesis proposal (Part 1) and a master thesis research project (Part 2). Students need to pass the master thesis proposal before they may continue with the master thesis research project. The proposal (Part 1) is produced in quartile 2 (between November and February) or in quartile 4 (between April and July). After the proposal is finished, students follow courses for one quartile and will only continue with Part 2 afterwards (Part 1 in quartile 2 and Part 2 in quartile 4; or Part 1 in quartile 4 and Part 2 in quartile 2).

There are two alternative ways in which students can select master thesis research topics: (a) students can either develop a thesis research topic in collaboration with their supervisor from the University of Twente or (b) develop a topic in collaboration with a company. In both cases, the supervision is done by examiners from the University of Twente (no company supervisor is needed).

The majority of bachelor thesis are conducted in collaboration with one or more companies.

  1. The company is only involved in Part 2: Students can either propose topics they find interesting or can select topics that are offered by university examiners related to their BA specialisation and expertise area. In this scenario, the company becomes involved after the thesis proposal is finished. The students usually collaborate with a company to collect data (e.g., interview, questionnaire). The students do not need a work spot at the company nor a company supervisor. They only a need a sparring partner at the company who can advice and open doors for the students.

  2. The company is involved in Part 1 and Part 2: An alternative way to select a master thesis topic is by collaborating with a company from the beginning. In this scenario, the company, the student and the supervisor collaboratively develop a master thesis topic and agree on the content and progress.

Both scenarios consider empirical research. In both scenarios, the students can invite company representatives to their colloquium. Company representatives are invited to share their opinion on the content and process of the thesis and can consult the assessment of the thesis.

Bachelor Thesis Process International Business Administration (IBA)

The majority of bachelor thesis are conducted in collaboration with one or more companies. The total duration of the bachelor thesis is 18 weeks (between March and beginning of July). Students work in bachelor thesis circles and are supervised by two examiners from the University of Twente. Under supervision the students first develop a research proposal of their bachelor thesis, which needs to be passed before they may continue with the research project. There are two alternative ways for students to select a bachelor thesis topic: (a) students can either select a thesis research topic that is developed by examiners from the University of Twente or (b) select a topic that is suggested by a company.

  1. University examiners propose bachelor research topics in their respective field and expertise area. A variety of bachelor research topics are offered to the students in seven bachelor thesis specialisation areas. Students apply for these research topics, after which the students are distributed over the offered research topics. In this scenario, the company becomes involved after the thesis proposal is finished. The students usually collaborate with a company to collect data (e.g., interview, questionnaire). Students do not need a work spot at the company, nor a company supervisor. They only a need a sparring partner at the company who can advice and open doors for the students. The supervision is done by examiners from the University of Twente.

  2. An alternative way to select a bachelor thesis topic is by collaborating with a company from the beginning. In this case, the company suggests a thesis topic and often agree on an internship. In this scenario, the students needs a supervisor from the company.

Both scenarios consider empirical research. In both scenarios, the students can invite company representatives to their colloquium which takes place at the University of Twente in the beginning of July. Company representatives are invited to share their opinion on the content and process of the thesis and can consult the assessment of the thesis.
